The thin sheets of polystyrene that are used for protective wrapping are pretty good too. ;D Just push a strip inside the slide.

I don't really seem to notice a loose fitting slide, I just crook my little (pinky) finger without thinking about it. I do have an issue with snug slides because the finger seems to swell a little and then becomes uncomfortable (for myself at least) The use of self-adhesive velcro seems a good idea to me if you must pack your slide out. Most of these adhesives are both temperature and pressure sensitive. I'd suggest warming the slide in a little warm water and drying thoroughly before application. I leave the pressure side of it up to you, how about a balloon ? (or something similar!) It's how we (are supposed to) do it at work! Better still, go to Diamond Bottlenecks and get one that fits ;<D
