Regarding the thumb pick you might want to check out the Fred Kelly slick picks. They are really popular amongst those who like a shorter thumb pick.

I always shape my plastic thumbpicks using nail clippers and a nail file or emory board - they seem to me like the logical tools and they work OK.

I was at the Sunday evening open mic jam at the Charlotte Street blues bar last night for the first time.
Two of the regulars played good finger style and slide on wood bodied guitars with no picks. The guitars were amplified rather than miced up but they sounded very effective.
Either they have some very good nail treatment or they use the finder tip which has become hardened by use. I never got to look or ask!
