The very name, and the fact that Stephen Fry uses it all the time, should be enough to warrant total avoidance... ;D

Twitter is also known as "micro blogging" 140 characters to get out what you want to say. You can cheat by embedding the fuller message in an associated webpage that can be linked to. I use it for "quick hit" notifications of Lucy's gigs, but you have to have "followers" to target...

Hi Ian,
Can you direct me to Lucy's Twitter page, or is that not how it works? I have heard that it is very good for spreading the word about gigs.
Thanks,

.....I can feel myself being sucked in by Facebook & Twitter. Especially Twitter, as it does look like a useful marketing tool. My only worry is how much time I have to put into all this!
MM Website / MM Forum / MM My Space / MM Guitars My Space / MM Facebook / MM Twitter
I think I might need some extra hands here at MM HQ

Okay, so I joined Facebook and set up my account. I now have various people contacting me, some I know but most I don't, asking to be my friends. I already have a couple of thousand 'friends' on My Space, so really don't need any more total strangers calling themselves my friends! In your privacy settings, click on 'search' and then set 'search visibility' to 'friends only'. I'm assuming you already found the ones about how much of your profile people can view etc. That should solve the problem LR

Thanks LR, everything is now set to 'private' and 'friends only', so nobody can find me! What happens now?

you want to find a friend then add them, the trade off they can see you. Public posts will appear on their profile, so their friends will see these - assuming your friend's paranoia privacy settings are lower than yours. The only private correspondence is by way of messages/email (inbox on the top menu)

Thanks Bod. I do have a Facebook page and I have looked at your Slidefest page, but I must be stupid or missing something as I still don't get it.
I set up a Facebook page a while ago and everyday I get a dozen or so emails from people I don't know asking me to be their friend. I know quite a few forum members have asked me, so I really should explain that I am not being negative or trying to ignore anyone, but I just don't get it. I did say yes to a few of the friend requests, but nothing happened!
I know that my daughters and many of my friends & associates use Facebook all the time, so I must be missing something.

No Michael.... You've got it right..... It's really called Spacebook! You can space out on it for hours with no real aim or purpose, You can even go on Farmville or Fishville and waste even more of your precious human form of life... Another way of helping lonely people to eventually become more lonely. I've sat here for days in front of my screen Tryin to make friends on the facebook scene I've been at it now for 2 years or more But still nobody's come knocking on my front door.
I got the facebook cyber hooked blues
regards

Thanks Bod. I do have a Facebook page and I have looked at your Slidefest page, but I must be stupid or missing something as I still don't get it. No worries - in this case the group page is just functioning as place to stick a flyer, a bit like a lampost or a wall might. If someone joins the group that'll show on their personal page and their friends might notice, go have a look etc (just as someone might go have a look if someone said, 'there's a flyer about a slide festival on the wall out there'). Other groups under other circumstances might start out and build up there, in something like the way that the SlideFest group has here - then there'd be threads with discussions etc serving more purposes, etc.(Not trying to sell you on it - seems it's not for you, fair enuff) It's really called Spacebook! I got the facebook cyber hooked blues. Thanks for clearing that up I had been wondering why my life is so empty and vain I'm much relieved to know that it isn't because of all the time I waste - and back to topic - on guitar music and guitar forums ;D

Hi Bod,
Please don't misunderstand my comment. I was not worried about you promoting the event, in fact quite the opposite, it is great! It is just Facebook that I don't get (that is just me, millions do get it). I guess you are right that it is not for me. I think if I didn't have this forum, a website and the MySpace pages, that I would see it differently.
