I think it depends on the style and material of fingerpicking whether it's one finger or more, I started years ago with thumb and forefinger but added on middle finger in some songs when going back from the 2nd to the first and in the case that I might want to play two strings at once. Sometimes its a brush with the forefinger on more than one string. Also Fred Mcdowell sometimes played a song using his thumb, which strikes the string in the opposite direction and gives a different sound. I studied "Going Over the Hill" using only the thumb on both bass and treble that way. Harriet I saw Martin Simpson last week and I was mesmerised by his right hand. It was like he had extra fingers.

Wish I could play rhythm/bass guitar like Brewer Phillips, though!

I knew about Django's left hand, but I had no idea about Hound Dog Taylor six fingers! Was he using his extra pinky? It would make sense, for example, to hammer on after a slide.

I don't think Hound Dog Taylor used that finger. His playing, while it does have amazing energy and vibe, is pretty basic stuff. Hound Dog is quoted as saying that he would like to be remembered as..."He couldn’t play shit, but he sure made it sound good!" Shine On Michael

Gets plenty of play in this house. Hound Dog chopped off the sixth finger of his other hand with a razor. Other bit of useless information is that he had 3 nipples.

can only point out that eventually fact and myth intertwine and become "history". seems like the ability to overcome great adversity is the main plot, to BOTH of my still functioning brain cells.
very little agreement as to the driving force that drove Vincent Van Gogh to cut off his ear.
i am still totally clueless as to how Ludwig van Beethoven could compose symphonies after he was deaf.
why did Robert Johnson insist his prowess in music was purchased in a very shady deal?
maybe the answer will come when it no longer matters to us.
if your eye offends you, pluck it out...
