Disparatesoul,
My pleasure, I am pleased that my ramblings are helpful to you and I thank you for your kind words.
The only way to know which type of slide is the right one for you, is to try them all.
I think I am more of a master troublemaker than a master musician. 😎🙏

I’ve just been alternating between my diamond slide and brass. The glass seems very slightly brighter, maybe even louder. The brass more mellow. The difference is very small. The glass is much more bulky than the brass and I think I prefer the brass as it is more the size and shape of my finger. The glass slide is longer and thicker and does not feel part of me when I play. The other thing is durability. If I drop the brass slide on a hard floor it will usually survive with no more than a scratch, I haven’t dropped the glass one yet but it might get more than a scratch! So I am willing to compromise, glass probably sounds ‘better’ than brass but brass suits me just fine. Pete

Pete Interesting Pete, i'd have thought the brass would have been louder and sort of harsher - but not necessarily in a bad way and the glass to be smoother and mellower. I guess it also depends on the type of glass used. I'm no expert, like i've said earlier i'm quite new to slide - but i've a feeling, like a lot of other techniques, that most of the tone comes from the player - and the sound difference is less than we think between different materials

The point made by Pete is a valid one, and of course the player is the most important ingredient and component. However, interestingly the various materials are different in everyone's hands. This is why I am always saying to people that want to sound exactly like their hero or favourite musician and get exactly the same kit as theirs, right down to the same make of socks, is that you still won't sound like your hero because they sound that way no matter what they are playing.
BUT....great tools and tools that you love own and use, do make a difference, even if it is only in our minds.

Ask for a German/Swiss glass slide from Ian. They look super cool and are great!

Hi there ! For those who prefer their slide to be metal, is it because the slide will be much heavier, or because you prefer the tone of the metal, or both ? I tried one of those heavy chromed steel-socket wrench things years back (some people rave about them for a slide) - but found it far to heavy for my pinky to cope with AND I struggled to do a fast & wide vibrato - it was just way too heavy. How heavy does it need to be, for those that prefer metal, before it's too heavy, even for them ? I REALLY like Diamond Bottlenecks' German/Swiss leaded-glass slides now. If I have understood this correctly : The glass is really dense but not quite as heavy as the fully leaded glass slides Ian makes. So, the slide can have really thick walls yet not be restrictively heavy. And, if I have this right, Ian said the glass is so hard he can't really polish it - they just stick it in the furnace again to melt the surface or something - and that makes it really smooth. I must say, it feels like molten glass - the way it slides over the strings (just not hot any more !!). I think the combination of the really hard glass and size contributes to the tone. I also feel that the larger the outer diameter of the slide (no matter what material), the flatter/better the contact the slide has with the strings - and it's this better contact that gives a better tone. A metal slide of comparable external diameter would be, I expect, far too heavy, unless the walls were thin, which would make the internal diameter too large for many slide players, even those with sausage-fingers ! So, try a nice fat German/Swiss glass slide from Diamond Bottlenecks - and they come in cool & funky colourful designs. You might have to ask Ian directly for a German/Swiss glass slide - as there is no mention of them (that I can find) in the Diamond Bottlenecks website. They may just come under Leaded-glass slides BUT there seems to be at least two types of leaded glass that Ian uses. My favourite two are circa 52mm long with super thick glass. They sound great and super agile moving around the fretboard as I think it's long slides that are cumbersome, not fat slides. Oh, and my most recent one (the one on the right) seems to make my 1931 Style 1 roundneck Tricone sing much sweeter & fuller & louder than any other slide I have. Attachments:

Hi all!
Ian here from Diamond Bottlenecks ~ please allow me to chime in regarding the different types of glass we use that's mentioned here in dispatches.
Firstly, my post is purely for information purposes only & is no way any attempt to advertise. The 'German / Swiss' glass is going to be the way forward in the future ~ our leaded crystal glass 'Ultimate' range will be very gradually phased out over the next few years as more energy-efficient electric furnaces that only melt non-leaded glass replace the gas-guzzling traditional furnaces currently in operation. A few specialist glass-blowers will still be able to produce leaded crystal glass, but the cost of obtaining the necessary 'batch' to make up the end product will unfortunately not be cost effective for us.
This 'German / Swiss' glass is actually.....Swedish (Bomma; Reichenbach and a few others) and offers glowing colours, is more durable than the softer lead crystal & matches the weight gram-for-gram - as mentioned above, the glass is quite difficult to 'work' because of it's hardness.
This transition from leaded to non-leaded glass will be very gradual over the next two or three years, but I'll always be happy to answer any questions 👍
Slide On!
The Flaschenmeister 😉
