Good news that you got the original case with it at that price!

Indeed. In fact the whole thing, as I suspected, was an amazing deal.
I guess those original cases are getting hard to find. Mine came with an original case, but that was 31 years ago. I re-lined it when I got it as the lining was as manky as the felt backing! I also strengthened it with many coats of Unibond, as it was showing signs of collapsing. It's been on the road numerous times since then and still holding up.

Looks like I'm going to have to do some archeology to get to the bottom of the tone control problem. Plaster by the look of it, a key weapon in the armoury of a luthier :-)

Ken, somewhere under that plaster is an aluminium plate with three screws holding it in place.

The inside reminds me of the various cast Nationals that I have taken apart, getting the horseshoe magnet some more oommph is a good trick, with mine the backs were pretty manky and I stripped and polished the rear and left it neat and shiny, the moulding of the X inside the plate always reminded me of the X men series of comics. I have an original pot somewhere from my 1st steel which had some work done if you need a spare drop me a line although not around to rummage for it until next week due to the curse of work.
Enjoy the process Lee

leeophonic,
[all of my familiarity with the actual as-built interior of these from above picts]
would the wire lengths allow horse shoe removal from aluminum housing enough to re-magnetize PUP?

O-o-ops,
leeophonic's warning about work schedule just sunk in after reading again.
does anyone familiar with these know if this style horse shoe PUP was a Rickenbacker or Beauchamp patent?
[now realizes there may be no wires attached to magnet]

The horseshoe is held in situ with simple screw and spring attachment, when mine were out and locating a sizeable chunk of steel (anvil) and letting it attach with a little drop helps orientate the polarity of the magnets, attaching to other magnets also helps bleed some charge although there will be electronic experts on here who will know more than me in this field!!! Hopefully my information is not poles apart from what is already being considered, abd any other magnetic quips I have missed...
