Following up from Petej's post about touching reactions, this is my favourite.
Townes has the blues.

I used to perform this song. I have been a Townes Van Zandt fan for a very long time. I saw Townes perform, but I never met him. My brother, Alan, knew him and so did some of my Texan musical friends. Townes was a genius.

Love this album. Apart from 'Live At Leeds' which is also very special. Co-produced with Glyn Johns and featuring the Gretsch 6120, 'Who's Next' is easily my favourite Who album. It's a masterpiece. Shine On Michael

But can the cover be misconstrued?

I don't recall "Mama's Got a Squeezebox" as being on Who's Next, but I agree that "Who's Next" is a formidable album, and I'm far from the greatest Who fan. My attraction towards The Who revolved around Moon and The Ox.
How about the residue of The Who and The Beatles together? Supergroup?

I must have listened to certain songs a thousand times as a kid and known the lyrics through and through, only to listen to them in adulthood and suddenly realise, sometimes with some shock, what they were really intended to be about. Or, indeed, that their meanings had changed to me personally or had adapted to my growing experiences. I think, indeed, lyrics and songs we write can be meaningful to our own personal situations in such a multidimensional ways, we can take what we want from them whether it was the artist’s intention or not (same with artwork.) I wrote some very obscure lyrics in a past band I was in and gave people a dulled down summary of what they meant if asked as they were thoughts so unique to me they were hard to really explain. So many songs have a double entendre element to them in which the lyrics may seem obvious but, to the writer, they are particular and personal Here in Murica a question slightly more perplexing than what the meaning of life is... What exactly is a " Pompetus" ? And what does it have to do with love ?

I see your Miller's Tale J and raise you:
"Scuse me while I kiss this guy / the sky"
With a trump of "Holding Back The Ears"
Er- no thanks, I've just put one out...

I was never a massive Who recordings fan either, but I saw them many times and always loved their live performances. Two memorable shows for me - one was at a 'Goodbye 60s Rock at The Oval' in the summer of '69 which the Who headlined, and then a decade later in early 1979 when they did their first show after Keith Moon had died, with Kenney Jones on drums and John Bundrick "Rabbit" on keyboards. I have vivid memories of those two shows over many others I saw. This thread is twisting and turning. Shine On Michael

I didn't ever see The Who, but I worked with an old centurian who worked for their light show company (Entec was it?) and he had some amazing "on the road" Who tour stories. Then again, Ken was an ex-matelot and had many great stories anyway- sadly all past tense. I have hazy memories of seeing Moon playing the drums on the back of a milk float around Chertsey...but that could be just me believing hearsay over the decades? His "Moon Base" house is still there hidden in the trees at the end of the unmade track by The Golden Grove. They broke that mould alright.

One thing Ive always appreciated about blues tunes lyrics is the ability to cut through the pathos and oppression of everday life with more than a few good jokes... far be it from me to decode some of the allegory, innuendo and double entendres. Im reminded of Roosvelt Sykes... a piano player that specialized in songs with some pretty bawdy and sometimes raunchy innuendo if you knew the deeper meanings... When I was in my early 20's He played regularly at the Pontchartrain Hotel bar which was a high society tuxedo gig... That cultured society sat there enjoying conversation and cocktails to a musical background that was somewhat pornographic was quite entertaining... fun topic... even tho im not certain what that might mean. all best yall, jeff PS... I broke up with steve miller after joker. For some reason that tune and that entire album really put me off... but dang if i wont go to my grave wondering about pompatos...lol. ... and lord knows what inspired pete townsend to record psychoderelict... i stll laugh at that after hearing it a few dozen times. I have never heard the who other than incidentally...but that recording I still listen to occasionally...
