Hi all,
Am currently playing a Busker Deco with a Sixtus flatpup in it - optimised for phosphor bronze strings i.e. b string down, g string up. It's a good pickup, records well and was pretty cheap. Though, as as someone put it 'it's handmade and not a sophisticated build'.
I really dislike piezo pickups. Even a hint of that plasticky top end quack turns me off.
However, I now am in the process of ordering a National Style 1 (woo hoo!) and wondered if anyone had a recommendation for a slim pickup that works with, or can be optimised for, phos bronze strings?
Cheers all!
Rich

Another Sixtus pickup, perhaps?

That has occurred to me. They just don't look great. I know....vanity, vanity. Was thinking more of the Lace slimline or National slimline and whether they work with phosphor bronze strings?

The Sixtus pickups are fantastic. In my opinion they are better than the other brands you have mentioned. The casing could be improved, but he does it all on such a tight budget and they work.

For a National tricone nothing works better than a Highlander Magnophonic. Expensive but excellent! Frank

Absolutely! I hadn't taken in that you are asking about a pickup for a new National Tricone. Twang1 is correct that nothing can touch a Highlander Magnophonic on a Tricone.

I've used lace ultraslim before - not a good sound, too many mids, sold it on. I have a sixtus and it's great - but you should use an acoustic modeller with it to make it sound best. TT

Thanks everyone. I didn't realise that the Magnaphonic wasn't a piezo - should really have looked closer at this. I have the Highlander IP2 system in my main acoustic and love it.
So I suspect I'll go for the magnaphonic.
For context, I've been doing a bit of recording recently in a local studio and we've got a great sound by recording my Busker using a mic and tracking the DI'd Sixtus magnetic pickup at the same time. Then before mixdown running the pickup signal through a cranked Vox AC30 and recording the output. Mixing this with the miked signal gives a wonderful clear, but slightly dirty sound. Works great for slightly nasty slide.
Wonder how the magnaphonic sounds run through a guitar amp.....?

Hi Michael, Hi Twang1 - Thanks for the advice. However, I've just been told that Highlander has stopped making the Magnaphonic. I looked at the Highlander site, it's still up there, so.... I called them and indeed they no longer do it. No plans for an alternative. Looks like the Sixtus is the way to go.
