Hi there !
As far as knowing how to check if there is a metal rod in the neck already, although for the age, I doubt it severely, take it to a friendly Dentist to extra the neck. I have done that to all the vintage Nationals I have ever owned (with wooden necks !) - as I am a Dentist anyway ! Never found one yet with a metal truss rod.

My advice it do not use a dental X-ray set for any use other than the one it was intended for. If you really want to you should apply for consent to the HSE in the UK. Whether they will grant it is another matter. Bill

Very nice guitar. As per the “tricone style headstock”, does it have the same scale length as a tricone, or the scale length of the single cone Nationals?

Hey there, every vintage National tricone I've come across has been 25", and every single cone has been 24.9" Kenny,

Interesting; I guess I chalked up a 0.1" difference to sloppiness - especially since the bridge on either model can usually slide that far with the tension taken off.
I shipped the guitar out for an overhaul today, so I'll have to measure it when I get it back.

Out of curiosity, I just measured my squareneck Style 4. The nut to 12th fret distance is 12 7/16, which indicates a nominal scale of 24 7/8. However, the bridge rests just a hair over 25" from the nut.

I simply based that question on the few NRP necks I have hanging around for future projects...there is a slight difference in fret alignment. I dont have a vintage roundneck tricone to measure...
Not suprised that NRP would tweak something for whatever reason.

Seems to me that 0.1 inches is well within National factory tolerance

12 fret Duolian neck support. Easy to see without the fingerboard on there. These support rods can come loose or get bent or have gaps. Easy to fix these points of failure or just add a new support rod to the channel. The fingerboards come off pretty easily too, most of the time they are already falling off!

I just bought this one off Reverb USA-heres the url to the video about the guitar by the previous owner-Jack Needham- 28-wood-body-tri-kc4w3b- hope that works cause I'm not up on how to transfer photos to the message board -sorry.Anyway a couple of interesting things about this one-square headstock -had a stamped National logo but there was a National decal over that which has now worn off-but you can see the shadow and the red stamped National logo remains .Also original cone with no spirals -anenome flower decals -don't have the serial number yet as I'm waiting for the repainted cover plate to dry -he did a really nice job repainting the cover plate which had been stripped probably due to flaking .so thats a pretty crazy one aye-? i got a hula girl from him that he had already repainted the cover plate and he does a great job using nitro cellulose type paint -both were $3200 US .
