Harriet,Well done.I really like this very much.I have not logged in for sometime.i was pleased to hear this. You do a mean Fred McDowell.Gret tone,dynamics,vocals...really very impressive. Talking of Germany blues.Didn`t Fred use the lyrics: "I've got a girl in Hamburg ... I've got three in Spain". On his black lion lp.This similarly is a version of"Frisco Lines" called"Germany Blues".Maybe that`s where the title/confusion comes from?. Maybe Fred never got around to singing that stanza on the version you were inspired by. Talking of"German" here is a big favourite of mine:
Great stuff,Harriet.

I enjoyed your clip and thank you for your kind words. Still veerinng towards the Germantown interpretation but you may be right. He has a verse that goes "I got a girl in Cuba and three in Spain" that appears in a version of "Thought I heard somebody" - and that I researched and found in a Blind Lemon Jefferson song from the 20's called Dry Southern Blues where he changes BLJ's Texas to Memphis for his version, which I am fairly confident is the source - If any reference comes up with regard to Germany I'll post - but have not been able to find it. And thanks again for your thoughts "I got a gal in Cuba, I got three in Spain Gal in Cuba, Lord I got, three in Spain Lord, one in Memphis, scared to call Woman in Memphis Lord, Lord I'm scared, scared to call her name, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord"

Harriet Fred sings "I got a girl in Germany,Lord, I got three in Spain, I got a Woman in Memphis, lord, I`m even scared to call her name" On the CD"My Home is in the Delta".The song is"Diving Duck Blues".He sings these lyrics as opening stanza. A fine CD and a great performance.I think it is Fred with a little tongue in cheek braggadocio, probably following European tours after his discovery. The fact he groups Germany with Spain makes me think he means the country and not the Memphis"German town".Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for that! I have the album but didn't remember.
Indeed he did play in the American Folk Festivals and certainly stopped in Germany - He's listed is an artist in 1965 and Home in the Delta is credited as 1965.
Well I'm off to "St. Louis" on the Mcdowell Relief Express, till later then ...
My best, Harriet
