Hi there ! I just wondered what you all think about ceramic slides ? I really like the Moonshine and Mudslide slides I have had, for 10-15yrs. My ones are all chipped now though. My oldest Moonshine slide is the one that does it for me the most, for playing Elmore James - I don't know why, it just does ! The Mudslide I have was great with electric guitar - until I dropped it and broke off a big chunk. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Diamond Bottlenecks - and will never ever play any other glass ones other than Diamond Bottlenecks. Once you have played one, you will know why ! But, it's always nice to have alternative slides. Some years back, I emailed the Moonshine Slides website people, to inquire about buying some more - but never got a reply. I also noticed Moonshine Slides in the guitar shops, sold with the Jim Dunlop name on the packaging. As the Moonshine Slides website had never seemed to change for years, I assumed maybe Jim Dunlop had bought over Moonshine Slides. The Jim Dunlop ones I have seen are not to the dimensions that I prefer. I thought I'd give another email to Moonshine Slides to see if they were still operational - and got an email back from the originator and maker, Terrie Lambert, and she is still very much making Moonshine slides. www.moonshineslides.com/moonshineslides.com/Home.htmlI hope to be ordering some soon, to my preferred size - and hope they are still as good as my old ones. I'll never abandon Diamond Bottlenecks though !!! Any more love out there for ceramic slides ?

Hiya Rich, There's a chap based in the potteries (Stoke-on-Trent) making custom-order ceramic slides - if I remember correctly he's calling himself 'Delta Slides' and does all of his business on evil-bay, mainly for the 3 & 4 string cigar-box community. His slides look very nice indeed and I'm sure he'd be happy to chat with you about a commission....but I'm definitely not a fan of 'flowerpot' slides on resonator instruments Slide On! Ian

I've got a Bigfoot ceramic slide, made in Portugal I think, that I quite like as a change from my preferred Diamond glass slide.

Hi again !
I'm due a wee shipment of slides from Moonshine Slides soon - a selection of the 3 types they make - Moonshine, Mudslide and a Moonshine Glass (one I've never tried before).
What I thought was perhaps a gimmick-sounding supposed benefit of the Moonshine slides, is the porous internal surface of them. But they really do help hold them on my finger, better than (slippery when sweaty) glass and metal slides.
I do prefer Diamond Bottlenecks most of the time, but for some reason I prefer my original (circa 15-18yrs old) Moonshine slide (large diameter, but short length) for playing Elmore James. I really liked my Mudslide for electric guitar - but I have knocked a large chunk out of it. The edges are not sharp, like a broken glass bottleneck would probably be.

I heard through the slide-makers' grapevine that Dolfinn has shelved Star Singer Slides for a year or so to enjoy life ~ he's a young and very talented ceramicist so when he returns to the bizz he'll certainly be at the top of his specialist subject!!
Slide On!
Ian.

Hi Ian, I'm sitting here thinking of all the wonderful things that might grow on a slidemakers grapevine! Lol! I've ordered a couple from Chickenbone John who's showing stock so hopefully it should be fine. Curiosity as much as anything, but they do look nice and I can't resist unusual shiny things! Best wishes, John

I may be up for selling if you’re interested as the size isn’t quite right for my ring finger, which I now soley use. I think CBJ stocks them though if you wanted a new one :-) I may get another - the 22mm inner dimension one. The one have is the M which is approximately 19mm...suits my pinky better!

Slide On! Ian. Yes, Dolfinn, the young guy who makes the slides is in New Zealand for a couple of years, but they are still available from various stockists.

Hi again !
Well, I got my shipment of Moonshine, Mudslide and Moonshine Glass slides.
Unfortunately, I'm a fair bit deflated and unimpressed with them - at least for using on reso guitars. My favourite Moonshine slide is really old and I love it. The new ones are not anywhere near as good.
I always knew there was a wee devil in my skull telling me to buy them, but the Angel in my head was telling me not to bother, and that I could never expect anything to ever be as good as a Diamond Bottleneck !
I actually wanted them the same dimension as my favourite Moonshine slide - a wider external diameter one, but with a smaller internal diameter - so the material was thicker - and thus heavier, AND at my usual 5cm length. I hoped they could make them like that - but they only make batches of the sizes and lengths they do, nothing custom, unless I order a larger number of them. Thought I'd chance it on the sizes closest (ie. smaller) - but they are just not big & heavy enough for me - for reso guitars. They might still be OK with electric guitar.
I hope Ian McWee will (forgive me, and) keep me supplied in REAL soda-lime glass slides to the dimensions I like. The last one I got from him is my favourite slide so far.

Hi guys, got my starsinger slides from Chickenbone John (very quick delivery by the way) had them a couple of weeks now. Good looking and well made, very smooth. I ordered the large size and velcroed the inside for my little finger. They are big, but not overly heavy. They have been enjoyable to use, I'm not comparing them to my other slides. I'm just saying their good in their own way. If like me you like to collect different types of slides I don't think you'll be disappointed with these. Not a lot of money really and I get the impression they may not be around again for awhile. Best wishes to you all, John
