Guitar Buddies and/or Teacher in South Devon
« Thread Started on Jul 3, 2012, 8:17pm »

Hi All,

First post I hope it's in the correction section! A little info if thats ok which will explain my questions :)

I'm a Thirty something who's only been playing guitar for the last 2.5 years. I've been playing predominantly electric and have done some RGT grades (up to 3) to help me learn.
I've always loved the Stones and from them have drifted to Peter Green and now Delta Blues and slide in particular. I absolutely love this type of music and wanted to try to play so I worked my way through the Mark Galbo 'Beginning fingertsyle blues book' and have now started on Stefan Grossman's Bottleneck DVD. I'm now at the point where I have my heart set on a MM Blues resonator guitar and am just getting the final pennies together for one!

I have a few questions please - Is there anybody in the South Devon area of a similar (low intermediate) standard who would like to meet up or is there anyone who I could get some practice/advice/mentoring with? Also is anyone aware of a really good slide teacher in my area? (My teacher is great but I'd prefer to explore slide lessons with an 'expert' and carry on with my electric stuff with him)

Thanks.

Andrew :)

Hi Andrew,

Welcome to our forum.

I don't have any suggestions for teachers or people to hook up with, but I just wanted to say hello and welcome you.

I am sure you will find somebody in your area via this forum.

Hello, depending where you are in south devon, try the blues jam,at the victoria inn, ashburton used to be second monday of the month, if you can find steve dow there he may still do lessons if not they are all a friendly bunch & somebody will help I'm sure,if you are closer to exeter try the blues jam at the stoke canon inn between exeter & tiverton, last sunday of the month, see if you can find alan hooper there I'm sure he will be able to offer advice as well, sadly owing to personal commitments I haven't been able to get to either of these for some time, but everyone at either event will give you some encouragement & welcome anyone to have a go regardless of ability ( thats what jam sessions are for) if you don't fancy playing there will be some great blues to be heard at both sessions, all the best , mike b.

In your general area, but on the North Devon coast is Jim Crawford. In my opinion he is the finest guitar tutor I've ever come across for blues and slide, well worth seeking out and travelling to benefit from his experience. He's a really nice bloke and a great performer, but more importantly for you, he's an excellent teacher - not all great players are great teachers, but Jim most definitely is.

If you want to hang out and jam, check out the Cigar Box Shindig at The Saracens Head in Newton Abbott on 14th July. although it's aimed at cigar box guitar players, there will be plenty of blues and slide stuff played. It will be a good opportunity to network with other players, and Brian Rangeley who is running the session also runs and plays at other open mic/jam sessions in the area. It's from 5.00pm until late, and it's free, but I'll probably be there a bit earlier, and I'll be happy to give you a few tips and pointers (on a 'normal' guitar rather than a 3 string cigarbox guitar!).

I had forgotten about Jim Crawford in Devon. He was a student of mine at the one of the first EBA Blues Weeks back in 2000/2001. I have never seen him teach or perform, but he does have a good reputation and he is fun to be around. A good contact for Andrew.

Wrinkley and Chickenbone (I've got to improve my username!) That is really helpful info.

John - I'm going to come along to the Cigar Box Shindig as that's really close to me - I hope to say hello to you and Brian, is there a good time to turn up that won't mess up your plans? I've also looked up Jim Crawford - I'm tempted by a workshop with him :)

Mike: Thankyou - that is really good info. I'm going to look into both those Jam Night's - I'm in Torbay so Ashburton and Exeter are about the same for me.

Hi Andrew,

That's great.....you have some places to go and people to meet!

Some private lessons, or a workshop with Jim would be very helpful to get you going.

Hi,

Same question but for East Yorkshire. I am struggling along with various DVDs but you only get so far. Other than the Pocklington fest. I am struggling to find like-minded people in the area.

Any suggestions for people looking to meet up and do a Yorkshire resobash??

Cheers
Mike
