Another thread has got me thinking. Would anyone be interested in a map of MM forum members? It might be a good way to notice another member near you and get together for a jam/say 'come to this local blues night'/come watch my gig or something like that.
I'd suggest, if people were interested, that simply usernames and towns or at most post code area (I'm Nottingham/NG7 for example) would suffice in giving people an idea of who's around without giving away where anyone actually lives.
I've had a go at setting something like this up on google maps and it works well, the question is whether people are interested, and ultimately whether Michael at forum admin thinks it's a good idea?
Cheers

That's why I think it'd be better, and more easily readable, to stick it on a map and PM the link to interested members, then if you're over on music-related travels about the country you could pop up your inbox, and check who's around your destination for your gig/general adventures

I have nothing against this idea, but I have two questions about it;
Who builds and maintains this map, how would a member add their location to it and where does it live?
If every member added their location to their membership details, which is already available, wouldn't that be enough?
As Pete says - somewhere on this forum is a 'Where Are You?' thread.
I think it is a great idea for forum members to get together.

I found forum members by looking at their membership details, anyone who is local to me i invite them round to my house for a reso bash, marcs been a few times and nick has also been along, last week we went to nicks house TT (deuce also came along)we havent arranged the next one but im sure it wont be to long, dont know how the others feel about it but anyone who wants to come along to my house is more than welcome, the way things are going i think one day we will have enough numbers to get Michael over for some instruction. and its great to meet other forum members its also good fun,and i think the benefits are great, for learning, and picking up tips and also gives you the confidence to play infront of others. If anyone from the west-Midlands wants to start a reso bash i'm up for it, wolvoboy

Hi Wolvoboy,
That is a great idea.
Back in 1999/2000 there was a group of students that regularly came to monthly workshops I did at guitar shop in Essex. Sadly the shop went out of business and rather than stop doing the Saturday morning workshops, we continued holding them at each others' houses. Each month we held the workshop at a different person's house. It was great, it was a very enjoyable and practical way of keeping our workshops going. Something to consider with a small group of people. I would be happy to come and teach/referee a small regular group like that. It is a great way of learning and sharing.

The map could easily be done through google maps. I set one up yesterday as a test, essentially it can either be open for anyone to see, embedded somewhere on this site, or the link could be sent out to people as they added themselves. Adding people could be done either by members PMing someone such as myself or you with their location, and then it being added, alternatively, the map can be shared by emailing people a link which allows them to become 'collaborators' and add themselves.
I don't really see a problem with the map being openly accessible, as no one would need to be located any more accurately than an area containing hundreds or thousands of houses, but obviously it's also important that people can choose what to share on the internet.
Cheers

i'm up for that Michael, sounds like a great idea, having a regular workshop with someone of your calibre would be tremendous, especially if a number of groups did the same thing, there would allways be a workshop to go to ,hopefully this could be the start of something really good, come on guys!!! wolvoboy

That is a very fair point Bill. It is important to maintain our privacy and that is the flaw in this idea.

This is true Bill, but there is no need to tell any of us your surname! It is important to be wary of who you share your personal details with, but I've started to feel that to a certain extent, people can find these things anyway, and it's more a case of what use is that information to anyone for untoward purposes?
I think anonymity on the internet is becoming less of an issue now that things like facebook are pushing for it to be the norm to share your real identity and certain information about yourself, however with anything like this it's very important that people have choice about what they share and control over that information even after they've shared it.

I think this is a really interesting idea, especially if it helps get members together.
I definitely think it would be best to be vague though as it will be available on the public domain but simply adding your username and your local town/city should be fine.
I have done quite a lot of work with google maps developing custom applications for it, it would be quite easy to have a form where users could submit there information and it would be added to the map automatically, meaning it would not require any one to admin it manually.
Im not sure what you can and cant do with proboards, but it may even be possible to add the form to your profile page within the forum itself, this would be ideal but maybe not possible, i might do some research when i have some time.
Im willing to help anyway if i can do something to make it a little easier, just have to find some free time

Here's an example of how a map would look/work.
http://tinyurl.com/MMforum1
It can be seen by anyone who is given the link (it's redirected through a tinyurl here) and edited by myself, michael, or any invited 'collaborator'. It's not listed on google's public listings. It could be embedded here, or the link could be PMed to anyone who consents to be on it, keeping it somewhat private, although not watertight. Obviously if the latter was favoured then a new map would be made as I've linked to this one here.
I know people are conscious about sharing their location, I've personally grown up in the facebook generation and so don't think much of giving away my approximate whereabouts. It's worth mentioning again that people can be as vague as they like about the location that would end up on the map, just give a post code area or town that's representative of the region in which someone might think 'I wonder if X would like to meet up', and more specific dealings can be made via private messages between members.
Cheers
