What are you listening to? « Thread Started on Dec 4, 2008, 2:48pm »
Just getting a new thread going - we haven't talked music for a while, so what have you been listening to lately?
When I was younger and this question came up in interviews; as well as what I was really listening to, I used to add what I thought would make a cool list. Please don't do that as the REAL list is far more interesting and shows what people are actually listening to.

Currently listening to Joe Bonamassa, only just discovered this guy & the recently released live album ('Live from nowhere in particular') is awesome. Anyway missed him in Birmingham but got a good seat at the RAH May Day 2009! Interestingly, all his favourite artists are British blues rock greats which maybe why his music strikes a chord.
Also kept in the car for frequent listening is PREACHERBOY - "demanding to be next" and Michael Messer "Diving Duck" (had to convert my vinyl album to CD!!).
Also lots of 1960/70's bluesrock - Free, Taste, Rory Gallagher, TYA, Zep, Cream, Fleetwood Mac etc etc

Here's my list:
Buddy Guy, Blues Singer (Silvertone) Acoustic album of terrific quality featuring a couple of BG's homies, viz BB King & Eric Clapton - all three together on Crawlin' Kingsnake. Wild!
Stars of the Slide Guitar of the Blues - a compilation CD I picked up in France during the summer, complete with 'remasterisation haute definition'! Some of the usual suspects (Muddy, Robert and Blind Willie Johnsons, Son House, Patton) but also some lesser known but still terrific artists (Allen Shaw, Weaver & Beasley and the wonderfully named Papa Too Sweet.)
Finally two CDs which were a gift from my American pal Christopher Brant Anderson (with whom I hope to be touring the US next year but more as a traveller than a musician) before he went home: The Very Best of Nina Simone and The Very Best of Booker T & The MGs. You can visit Chris's MySpace site by going to mine - www.myspace.com/gerrycooper - and checking out my top friends. Some of his songs are up there which I also am listening to on CD as we may re-record them together: he wants some slide guitar parts on them...
And oi! Michael! What are you listening to? Or do we have to do all the work round here?!

Today I listened to;-
John Butler Trio. Australian band, big over there, John also plays a mean lap slide, through effects sometimes. Then for old times sake, put on London Calling by the Clash, which then ihspired me to listen to Joes album he did with the Mescaleros. Then like GerryC I had on Booker T, only I have the Stax Profiles comp. Steve Cropper, is my all time favorite electric guitarist, economy, melody and Telecasters! Rounded it off with an Emmylou Harris comp. which has some tasty dobro on it, Jerry Douglas mainly. Tomorrow could be very different, were an eclectic lot in our house. My daughter has purloined my REM outtakes album called Eponymous, so I am hearing that a lot through the walls!!!

Hi, I quite like The Killers but haven't bought any of their CDs (my son played it to me).
In the car at the moment is Bert Jansch, Leonard Cohen, Taste, Ravi Shankar, Pink Floyd and The Shadows
I'm still buying things I didn't at the time for whatever reason e.g. the most recent CD I bought was 'ontinuous performance' by Stone the Crows. The other music I bought recently was the 4 LP boxed set of Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains the Same.
I'm surprised to see there are no blues recordings in my current list although that is partly because I had some blues CDs in the previous load in the car.

In my car at the moment I've been listening to Django Reinhardt and the Pixies. In the Stig Noise Sound System tour van we listened to a mixture of English Folk, Bluegrass and Rockabilly on the way down to play a rave in Bristol - sort of clears your ears before sitting in front of a 10K bass bin trying to hear my own lap steel - and I'd forgotten my ear plugs - consequently I'm not listening to much at the moment.
When's someone going to release that Jim and Bob stuff Michael?
