Yes, the cat is finally out of the bag, or should that actually be 'The dust-bunny is out of soundwell!' ......... This book has been part of our lives for the past seven years. Hopefully 'Palm Trees, Senoritas and Rocket Ships' will be a reality (a VERY heavy reality...at 3kgs) by the end of January 2013. Here are a couple of promotional flyers that Mark has sent me. Thank you for your kind words, but this beautiful book is all Mark's own work. I have helped along the way, but it was Mark who has written it, illustrated it, researched his subject and put this together. 1100 illustrations of guitars, a few hundred amplifiers, 70 or so illustrations of musicians, plus logos, catalogue references, and the largest list of National serial numbers that has been assembled. This is THE book! There is no other guitar book like it.
I have known Mark for 30 years and for as long as I have known him he has researched this subject and drawn beautiful illustrations of National guitars. Mark's passion and research on the subject of National guitars, the Dopyera brothers and their incredible legacy, started 15 years before I knew him in the 60s when he got a National and wanted (needed!) to know more about it. His obsessive appetite for knowledge has led him to be the most knowledgeable person in the world on this subject.
Mark had been talking about this book way back when I first knew him and just over seven years ago he put pen to paper and has worked on this project, Palm Trees, Senoritas and Rocket Ships, almost every day since that time. Even as it goes to print Mark is adding information and adjusting the text.
My role in this was often just to give moral support when Mark felt the task was too big to complete. "Rubbish" I would say....."keep going, you're nearly there....only another 800 guitars to draw!" I also helped with some of the research and during the summer of 2012, using Skype's screenshare, I proof read the whole book with Mark.
This is ALL Mark's own work and it is an incredible achievement. I am honoured and proud to have been involved with this beautiful piece of work.
I am now counting the days to when I get my copy.
Well done Mark......YOU did it!

Mark's beginning work on Vol. 2 in March (just kidding! ) Seriously ~ this book is a must for anyone remotely interested in the Dopyera Bros history & instruments. I've seen snippets of the books' bits 'n bobs over the past few years on our regular trips to Nottingham, and the detail is truly mind-boggling!! - it's those little details like matching a guitar's timeline & model to the background colour inside the headstock decal Many congratulations Mark & Michael. Slide On! Ian.
