This year for my birthday, I was given something that I actually wanted!!!! My Wife bought me a copy of Michael Messers Blues Slide Guitar DVD NICE! I've been fumbling my 'undisciplined' way through slide for the last 3 or 4 months or so. Damping the strings? What the hell is that? I'll figure it out later! Finger picks! Get outta here! Yeah, thanks Michael!!! The invitation to play Salisbury is still open, but I may just use the opportunity to throw my old pyrex slides at you!!!! Ok, yeah, there is an upside. My playing has improved. Damn, why does the disciplined approach work every time? Thanks Michael, I've really only just started working on the basics of your DVD but its making a hell of a difference to my playing, although its hard going, its compulsive! One improvement leads to another. Creative camera use, combined with clear and concise verbal instruction is all anybody needs to make improvements. Anybody out there who is struggling with the mysteries of slide guitar needs to buy this DVD. It will make a difference! Cheers Michael Rich

Hi Rich,
Your message is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED - Thank You.
I am always pleased to hear from people who have benefitted and learnt from my DVD. When I made the film I knew that I wanted it to be easily understood and visually as clear as possible. Too many of the tuition DVDs that I have seen are complicated to follow and the camera-work makes it difficult to see what is happening. The idea of filming from a 'player's eye view' was something that I had wanted to do for a long time. Also talking and demonstrating in a way that as much as possible puts me and the student in the same room was an important thing for me to achieve.
I am very happy that so many people enjoy and learn from the DVD.
Next time I visit Salisbury I will watch out for flying pyrex slides!!!
Keep in touch Shine On Michael.

Hi Michael Ever since I received my reso right after crhistmas '09, I have been playing slide for at least 5-10 hours a week - it surely is difficult to let that guitar rest.... I personally think my slideplaying has improved quite a lot, and I have been using slide earlier also, but not this much. About your tuition DVD on slidetechniques, would you say this is relevant to me...as I have never studied any techniques, but are mostly self-taught on slide playing....? But I'm thinking about whether there are some basics I don't know of, which could help improving my future slideplaying ? I have read about your DVD, and it does seem interesting, but I still would like to hear an expert's advice.... Best regards Eholst

Hi Eholst,
Thank you for your message.
Although the lesson is aimed at beginners, it will help anyone who is learning slide and wanting to improve their skills. I do not teach songs, only techniques and licks.
Here is the press-release about the DVD.
This DVD is the ultimate tool for learning how to play Blues Slide Guitar. It features unique camera shots giving the student a ‘player’s eye view’ of Michael's left hand.. This new approach to filming the left hand shows you very clearly everything you need to see to learn how to play slide guitar. Michael Messer provides clear instructions along with numerous insights and hot tips.
Michael starts with the basics of how to hold the slide to produce a clear note and a great tone.He demonstrates string dampening techniques, vibrato, tone, sustain, scale patterns and riffs up and down the neck, for both solo and backup parts in the style of your favourite blues guitarists.
The lesson focuses on open G and D tunings. Each one is explained in detail with close-up demonstrations to help develop your skills. The lesson covers chords and positions, slide techniques, classic delta blues, one chord north Mississippi blues, three chord Chicago Blues, walking bass blues, licks, improvisation techniques and much more.
I hope that helps. Perhaps forum members who have the DVD can tell you more about it?
Shine On Michael.

Hi
Thanks for you advices Michal and Al....
I did read the description of the DVD, but it's always great to hear what experts and users of the DVD have to say....
I do admit it could help me in improving the techniques....this was also my first thought....
So I'd better get to ordering.....actually, where can I do this at best...? Any advice....? Frets.com or...?
Best wishes

I have MMs DVD and have been playing slide for about 6 years or so. What i like about it is that it addresses the basics of the techniques involved and then presents a few riffs to learn and ideas for you to explore on your own. It covers Open G & D and in my opinion gives you enough information to get you playing and sounding like the blues. I like the fact that there isn't acres of repertoire to studiously learn (and subsequently forget) I used it to form some of my own musical ideas and I still refer to iback to it occasionally . I would certainly recommend it to a beginner struggling to find some one for guidance in what is essentially a deceptively difficult style to get to grips with (IMHO) Roj

Hi ehoist.
My Wife bought my copy from Euroblues as per the link in Michaels post. It arrived in about 4 days I think, pretty quick anyway.
From what you are saying you and I are probably around the same level. I would be very, very surprised if the DVD didn't help you with technique. I was certainly lacking in that department and its sharpened me up a hell of a lot. My playing has changed for the better and is continuing to change in a couple of very important ways. Important for me at least.
Firstly, my technique is a whole lot better, I'm damping the strings efficiently, which I wasn't doing before. resulting in a much better sound. Cant get my head/fingers around picks yet, but, hey, one thing at a time eh.
Secondly, I've worked hard on the slide licks that Michael demonstrates, this has resulted in improved improvisation.
I have some other instructional DVD's, but as Michael says, they are generally difficult to follow and can be very frustrating when you just cant see what the tutor is demonstrating. The "over the neck" or "players eye view" that Michael uses makes things a hell of a lot clearer! You cant fail to pick up on whats going on and what is being explained.
Its made a world of difference to me, I'm a much happier and far less frustrated player.
So, Michael, When's the sequel coming out?
Rich.

The sequel will be available later this year. It will be a lap steel beginners lesson, much in the same format as the Blues Slide DVD. There will be a volume 2 Blues Slide Guitar DVD, but we do not have a date to film it yet.
What would you like to see in a volume 2 Blues Slide Guitar lesson?

Hi Michael As to your question what would be interesting in a volume 2 DVD for blues slideguitar...well, I haven't yet seen the first, so perhaps my suggestion are not so good....but anyway.... One thing I have noticed in slide guitar in many songs is that it sometimes beccomes very much the same rifs and sound....so one thing I could suggest is to concentrate on variations... For instance, I myself are trying to develop new ways of using the slide, to put new ideas into slide playing, one thing I have learned now is to hammer on / "pull off" the slide, you could compare it to hammer on / pull off with you finger when playing lead on an electric guitar....this creates a variation...well, I hope you can get the idea of what I mean..... If you know Eric Sardinas...he also plays slide guitar in a different way than many....you could perhaps also use some of his rifs and techniques....to illustrate different ways of using the slide... Best wishes Eholst

The DVD is available in the US. However we have had quite a lot of orders from your side of the pond and everyone has been happy that the DVD plays fine in American DVD players.
Thanks for the suggestions. It is always interesting to get feedback from people about this stuff.
Hammer-ons and pull-offs are an interesting technique to use with a slide. I guess I first became aware of it watching Rory Gallagher play in the early seventies. Before Rory, Earl Hooker did it occasionally, but the main exponents of the hammer-on & pull-off are country lap-style Dobro players. Josh Graves was probably the pioneer of that technique, which is used a lot in that style of playing. I think Eric Sardinas probably comes from the Rory Gallagher route like I did.
Shine On Michael.
